Poor girl! (Spoiler rant)
Ugg, I just hated this book.
I never write bad reviews especially about an author I love and respect like Ms Maxwell, but...
The heiress of this story is emotionally wounded and has lived ignored by her selfish parents.
She is tricked and manipulated by the hero to marry him on his terms not hers because thy have a past and he needs her dowry asap.
She drinks brandy, in seemingly small amounts, to soothe her nerves. The hero fixates on this and 'tough loves' her into stopping Cold turkey. She is filled with shame which makes her want to drink more and sneaks some. He freaks out like a child smashing things. He leaves their bedroom to sleep in the stables for weeks embarrassing her to her new staff, doesn't talk through it with her, or even ask what quantities she drinks.
It seems like she only has a couple of sips a day...especially since drinking a hip flask (max 6oz) makes her blackout drunk.
The hero treats her as bad or worse than her parents. He threatens to send her back to London with no funds while he keeps her £50k dowry...then withholds affection and conversation when she stays.
His family is compassionate and wise and help her on her way of self love...her jerk of a husband 'forgives' her and they live happily ever after.
All and all I had dread in my stomach throughout the book and wanted to give the poor girl a snifter of brandy and a hug.
