Lifts 10 lbs, not 100 lbs
Unpacked this and promptly slapped it up against an old refrigerator and was surprised at how little pull it had. Before I dismissed it as just a cheap ferrous magnet with a decent handle - exactly what it is - I thought I'd test it. To be clear, here are the claims made on the packaging itself: "Lifts up to 100 lbs" and "lifts up to 100 times its own weight", along with information currently in the description: "Magnet weighs 1.25 pounds." Results of tests that leave me thoroughly dissatisfied: • Magnet weighs 0.813 lbs, +- 0.003 lbs, not 1.25. There's no appropriate reason for this number to be advertised more than 50% higher than the true value; already one of the advertised claims is now reduced to 81 lbs. Bad. • Lifts a (huge, antique) cast iron pipe wrench that weighs 8 lbs. Good. • Cannot lift two of these wrenches at the same time, even when carefully positioning flush, flat, topside (to minimize leverage working against the magnet) faces onto the entire magnetized area. Bad. • Cannot lift a 15-lb cart made of 1/8" sheet steel. No matter the point of attachment, the magnet's hold only reliably lasts through getting 1 wheel about an inch off the ground, always failing before getting two (of four) wheels three inches off the ground. Bad. • Cannot lift a 10-lb bench vice by gripping anything other than the perfectly flat base. Bad. I understand that the magnet's technical pull strength measured under ideal conditions MAY reach 100 lb of force. I appreciate the unambiguous language now used in the description regarding how that number is reached. I should have trusted my instincts when I could not find any reviews claiming success with anything actually known (not guesses) to exceed 25 pounds. Some reviews mention "scary-strong" levels of pull; these reviewers have clearly not worked with large neodymium magnets that usually earn that moniker. Speaking of neodymium magnets, in a bar magnet shape it takes a 4" x 1" (4 sq inch) bar at N42 grade to break the 100-lb pull force mark (though 3" x 1" comes very close). Such a magnet will run you forty to fifty dollars at a reputable, dedicated magnet supplier, and that measurement assumes the entirety of the face is in contact. How does this magnet compare? Well, its magnetic face measures 0.75" x 3.89", i.e. 2.9 square inches, and is offset so that more than half the area is air-gapped off the face by more than 1/8". How can such a magnet reach a 100 lb pull strength? It can't; if it could at this size it would be N52 or N55 grade - and any claims of grade or even material are conspicuously absent. Whether or not some technical hoop-jumping can produce a test result that's over 100 and has lbs as the unit, however, still doesn't excuse the overall claims made advertising this product. Simply put, this magnet cannot "lift up to 100 lbs" nor "lift up to 100 times its own weight".
