If I could give zero stars I would. After going through several digital scales that aren't consistently accurate, I decided an American made product would be best. I invested money on this and it simply is not accurate. I believe the unit I received is defective because the notches on the 50 pound weight adjuster do not line up with the numbers. In use you end up with a weight that is off by 7-10 pounds per 50 pound adjustment. I called Detecto and they couldn't have been more rude and unhelpful. When I explained that the notches don't line up with the numbers, the tech support man actually told me "they have been made this way for 60 years" and they "they aren't supposed to line up". So what is the purpose of the notch I asked, "to lock in the weight so its accurate," he replied. But how can you get an accurate weight, if the notch doesn't line up with the number I asked? If it locks in a quarter inch ahead of the number, what number does that correspond with? It's not labelled so you can't use the scale at all unless you ignore the notches and don't rest the weight in there. After several minutes of back and fourth he still wouldn't even admit the unit was defective, and didn't really seem to have the intelligence to understand the problem. It doesn't seem possible that a company would design a product with notches to lock in the weight adjuster, only to effectively render those notches useless. Either 1) I have a defective product or 2) this is a 60 year design flaw. I am going with 1 and either way will never bother with Detecto junk again. Detecto referred me back to Amazon and does not stand behind their product. I would highly recommend not buying this piece of junk, unless you want junk that has been made this way "for 60 years."
Update 5/20/16 - Detecto called me back and apologized. They said they had been receiving calls from other people with the same issue. They indicated that the wrong part was used on some number of scales. Essentially a part designed for a kilogram scale was used on this version, which created the situation where the notches did not line up correctly with the weight and numbers. Glad they stand behind there product, but I have returned this for a full refund. If your going to buy this, make sure you don't get one of the defective ones.
