A good try, but the speed and performance are majorly lacking!
Pros:
- Easy to setup
- Great app to manage wifi
- Stylish
- Remove wifi dead zones with 'mesh'
Cons:
- Google Network Assist doesn't work in directing traffic and avoiding wifi congestion
- Your internet speeds will slow down (potentially a lot, like not enough to even surf the web)
- Older PCs that don't have 5G wifi will get choked off when multiple devices are connected
- Other options in the market for less with far better performance (ex. NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S)
Google Wifi has good intentions, but royally fails as a router to give you fast internet. First off, don't be scammed by MU-MIMO technology (what Google calls Network Assist). The vast majority of your devices at home like your PCs, TVs, and phones are not compatible with MU-MIMO technology that is supposed to unclog your wifi and make devices fast (what Google shows in the product video as switching lanes during traffic). In fact, not even the iPhone 7 supports MU-MIMO. The reality is Google has created a somewhat expensive way, though easy to setup and manage, to make sure you have internet all over your house and remove wifi dead zones. Do NOT expect your internet to be fast, but it will be everywhere.
I bought this to replace the 2-in-1 modem/router combo we got through Xfinity. I bought it in combo with the Zoom 16x4 Cable Modem (which is amazing). Problem was once I got the Google Wifi router setup (which took only minutes) I noticed across all our devices major drops in internet speed. We pay for 75mbs with speed boost, but my wife's brand new Macbook Pro was getting 25mbs through Google Wifi while my gaming PC was getting 5-10mbs!!! Hardly enough to even load a Youtube video. I reached out to Google support and they told me they would escalate the issue to a technician and get back to me in a few days. In the meantime, I did my homework and came across SmallNetBuilder, which has a ton of information and thorough reviews. That's where I learned what was bogus marketing and what technology actually works. Just because your router can do something fancy or has the latest whiz-bangy feature, doesn't mean that it's compatible with your devices. Case and point, MU-MIMO (aka Network Assist) not working between our PC, MAC, and 2 iPhones.
I've returned the Google Wifi router and instead bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S. Now I'm getting 35-45mbs and my wife is getting 120mbs via the 5G channel. Huge difference! I hope this helps you in weighing your options. Best of luck!
