I was mislead by somebody.... somewhere...
Well, here's the thing. I should have researched the author and his intended market before I purchased the book. I heard him on NPR, and I hate to say this, but I rather suspect that his publicist and/or publisher coached the author in how to be interviewed to make the book sound as though it applied to people in their interpersonal relationships, in their private lives, when actually it's designed for people in the workplace. I found this out after I bought the book, became deeply confused, and then listened to some youtube Stanford talks and a couple of other things. This is a book for an MBA in his or her second or third year with a company when they have proved their worth, and are now trying to find out how not to work 24/7. It is not about how to live a simplified life at home, a life clarified by intelligence and thoughtfulness, unless you want to manage your partner and loved ones like your own privately held corporation. The author is a writer in the field of business. I would have known this if I had looked at his other titles. I'm a little sorry the NPR interviewer obviously hadn't read the book, either, and, hey, maybe I heard the review wrong. Who knows? But don't buy this if you want to know how to make your home a haven and your relationship uncluttered by nonsense. That isn't what this is about.
