Barely Watchable
Grew up with Daniel Craig as Bond and I generally enjoy Cary Joji Fukunaga films, but this one was a stinker. The typicality memorable and iconic opening scene was lazy and stuffed with odd CGI effects. They were already loosing my trust 15 minutes in, but I gave them more time to earn it back. There’s considerable effort to convince an out of touch retired Bond to return, the only problem is this story point was literally already done during the Craig era, it didn’t work the second time and especially not with unnecessary exposition filled scenes such as showing us Bond call Fenix just to say he’s in. Beloved supporting characters like Fenix are brought back without any real motivation, only to be killed in the next scene in a manner which was straight out of every Jason Statham and Vin Diesel movie. Ana de Armas is only given 10 seconds of screen time which I assume sets her up for the next Bond film, because it was a hokey scene and a waste of the strong presence she brings to the screen. And then there’s Q’s backstory dinner scene, for no reason other than to score cheap points with the audience the writers contrive a moment where we learn Q is gay, even though a large part of Qs appeal is a that no backstory is revealed in prior films since it’s this mystery that makes him an intriguing character.. there’s also just no reason to tell the audience something they already know. The biggest bone I have to pick and the primary reason this film doesn't work for me.. there is no clear overarching villain standing in Bonds way. Everything comes relatively easy, Christoph Waltz is a non-factor and Remi Malek hardly puts up a fight.
