Very disappointed! A LOT of MAJOR problems. You should read this.
I have Amazon full size Echo's deployed throughout the home. I wanted to populate Alexa to less used areas. Guest bedrooms, all bathrooms, hallways, etc... obviously using the full size Echo gets very costly for low used area's. I was really hoping this would be an inexpensive solution. Saying this... I knew the speaker would not be as robust as the full size Echo for very obvious reasons. Surprisingly enough, it actually doesn't do a bad job as far as the speaker goes.
Where the Dot fails as noted by others... The microphone is worthless. If you are not on top of it, it's over. Good luck getting it to recognize your voice properly. I've bought two to test out and they both fail the test. Most times I can get the Dot to turn on via the Alexa trigger word. After that.... fail. If you are not on top of it, it would hardly understand you. As others have noted. Shouting at for it to hear you is loud enough to trigger the full size Echo in another room. Another problem is both the units i've tried out loses connection. And yes, I do know it is an issue with the Dot because I've placed the Dot where a full size Echo was and the Echo had no issues. Even if you have an access point very nearby, it lags at times and also loses connection. I have a constant 150Mb+ throughout the home with three Access Points to ensure there is five bars of WiFi everywhere.
Bottom line is, it's a great idea for a low cost solution for low traffic areas or someone on a budget. At this time, I would not recommend purchasing the Dot until the problems are solved, and there are a LOT of MAJOR problems. I am very disappointed. I'm going to try voice programming again on the units as well as renaming some of the smart devices. I'll update the review if I can find a solution but as of now, both units will need to be returned if I cannot figure this out. They are that worthless right now, mainly because of the Mic.
