Still a very stripped down check register
Even after all these years, Intuit still hasn't gotten a clue that Mac users are here to stay. Quicken for Mac 2016 is still a stripped down check register. Straight out of the box, even though the program was just released yesterday, I had to wait and download "updates" for the program. Then it froze multiple times trying to download banking information. This was a fresh install, I wasn't even trying to "upgrade" from a previous version. Heaven help the user who tries to do that. All in all, it took me 2 1/2 hours to get the program up and running. Once I did, I was disappointed to find that it is a very bland interface that is difficult to maneuver. It is hard to find the "home screen" and once you maneuver away from it, it closes completely and you have to find it all over again. The register it's self is bland and hard to read, especially for my aging eyes. Just shades of grey and white (at least I haven't been able to find a way to change to a larger font or colored lines at this time.) The budgeting feature is still lackluster. There are much better programs out there if you want flexibility such as biweekly or weekly budgeting systems (YNAB is one of them). Considering how long Quicken has been around and how frequently this has been a complaint of it's users, you think Intuit would have gotten the hint by now...not everyone wants a monthly budget. What is completely dismal in this feature is the lack of ability to set up the paycheck check feature that has been prominent in all of the PC versions for years. I would love to be able to track my deductions for tax purpose. To do it now requires multiple steps. Epic Failure!! I am just getting started importing my investment data, but with the failures I have seen so far just with normal banking, I don't hold out much hope things will go well there. I will update this review when I get done. All in all, Intuit still thinks that Mac users will go away and that we are fine with stripped down versions of software. I will give this about 2 weeks to see if I can make some modifications. But more than likely, this will be going back and it will be my last venture with Quicken. Update: 2 days later and I am finding new quirks that baffle me: In the register, when I add columns that I find helpful, the next time I open the register, they are gone and I have to add them back again. Minor, but still annoying. Bill Pay- Yes, it's there. Again, coming from earlier PC versions, it seems "hidden"now. I don't know if they have done this in all of the latest versions or if this is a Mac feature. I don't want to have to open up drop down menus to have to find another set of menus to tell Quicken to send this to my bank. I want a nice, simple lightening bolt like the older versions right there in the register. Oh well, I guess my age is showing. The number of program crashes is still perplexing. Considering the awesome job Intuit has done with Quickbooks, I just don't understand why they can't get it right with Quicken. Mobile: I finally did find the mobile version. I am pleased with the interface. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I prefer it over the desktop. The lack of investment data is disappointing, though. I'm still not convinced I want to stay with the Mac version. I may have to bite the bullet and continue to use Parallels just so I can have a decent version of Quicken. 11/22/15 New bug noticed today- I just finished importing several credit card accounts. The balances were incorrect on a few of them. We are talking off by several hundreds of dollars when I went to reconcile. If I can't trust the balances, what good is the software? UPDATE: After spending MULTIPLE hours with customer support trying to deal with the issue of transactions being downloaded two and three times, as well as the reconciliation issues with the CC's, the software got packed up and sent back. Unreliable data is unreliable.
