Trash on my clean kitchen floor!
I don't require a lot from my trashcan. It doesn't have to match my decor, it doesn't need an automatic sensor, an R2D2 cover or be big enough to hide a dead body, I just require two things: 1) that it hold my garbage and, 2) that it have a step-to-open lid that doesn't require me to touch the lid to dispose of said garbage. This trashcan fails on both counts. If you try to open the can with the convenient step-on feature the can leans forward and the lid halts at the 3-5 inch open spot, which means you have to manually open the lid the rest of the way or try to squeeze your refuse into the thin slot. If the can is against a wall, the lid will not open at all. Moreover, the can tips over because it is woefully top heavy, hence the title for my review; Trash on my clean kitchen floor! The can is shaped in a wedge, with the smallest part at the base then gradually expanding upwards to the lid. While this is an aesthetically pleasing design, it lends itself to tipping, the natural response would be to brace it, by placing it against a wall, but if you do that, the lid will not rise. If the bottom of the can was heavier and thicker, it would have been enough to counterbalance the entire can, but the base is made of the same thinnish plastic as the rest of the Umbra Brim Waste Can. I would have sent this can back, if not for the box, my son used it to make a car, then a ship and it was a super big box and going to the trouble of finding another ultra large box just wasn't worth it, plus, I did find a way to make this can work. To open the can; 1. Pull can at least 6 inches away from a wall. 2. Press your foot down on the step-open mechanism while pressing your knee forward so that the waste can is resting against your leg (make sure your legs are a good distance apart so that you are well balanced, it's easy to stumble a bit if you are doing this while holding awkward and/or heavy garbage and while keeping the can from fall over). 3. Do not take your foot off the step-open lever until you have discarded your refuse and can safely allow the can to return to the floor (instead of having it lean against your leg). Some of the time the lid will close on it's own (this is a slow process and about half the time you have to give it a nudge to finish), but you have to be careful as you take your foot off the step open lever because without a wall behind the can to brace it and without your leg to support it the can is very unsteady and could fall over! I know, this all sounds like a big production and a huge annoyance (it is) and I definitely will be more careful about my next trashcan purchase, but I guess I've gotten used to it.
