Bad product
I would give this charger 0 stars if I could. I've successfully prototyped and designed several 12V battery charger circuits in the past. I decided to gave this SC-1200A charger a shot due to the convenience of not having to put together another circuit. It claimed to output a good amount of current, just good enough for my application. To test it out, I connected an AGM battery (in good condition, by the way), selected the AGM setting on the charger and decided to monitor the voltage. It started charging the battery at 15.8v, that's right, you read that correctly, 15.8v, which was unnerving to say the least. The charger had estimated the battery's capacity to be 85%. I decided to wait and see if the voltage would go down. An hour later the voltage increased to 16.7v, with the estimated capacity of 99%. I decided to push the envelope a bit and left it for another hour. The voltage remained between 16.6v and 16.7v (verified this with my multimeter as well). The estimated capacity remained at 99%. I tried playing around with the settings after this. Tried changing it from 10A to 6A and then to 2A. I even tried changing the battery type settings as well. It never charged the battery below 15.2v. I tried swapping batteries with several different kinds (SLA, FLA, AGM). I got the same results.
This is beyond nuts. I'm returning this charger as quickly as I can. I overnighted a Stanley BC8609 charger as a replacement for this horrible charger.I decided to test this one out as well and compare the results. Even though the Stanley charger is weaker, rated at 8A, and slightly more expensive, it never went above 14.5v while charging. Soon after the nearly charged battery was connect to it, it went to 13.6v to float it. That's the performance I was expecting. Very predictable, and just the way a charger should behave.
Not to mention that the entire SC-1200A charger looks like it was made out of low grade plastic and feels cheap and flimsy to the touch. The fan is always on and extremely loud. The high pitched RF noise it emits is annoying to say the least. Don't make the mistake of getting this charger. I will be staying far away from any Schumacher product in the future as a result of this experience.
