Spoke with Samsung support after receiving the watch and trying to find the messages app, and was notified that message notifications and text messages are only supported by carrier purchased devices. Returned device immediately as it's functionality is extremely limited in this version. It makes little sense that Samsung would make a watch version that can receive calls and Snapchat notifications but doesn't support text through Bluetooth.
