Updated Review --- DO NOT BUY!! Static Electricity resets the band.
UPDATE -- DO NOT BUY!!!!!
Many people, including myself, are dealing with Band Resetting issues (band randomly resets to midnight, losing all data). The company has announced that this is due to Static Electricity. But it's due to "your environment" and thus "your problem". Jeez, I guess I'd better tether myself to ground all day. Better yet though, since it is your problem, you have to pay to ship it back. Yup. Not only has their support been awful (and I mean awful), their product doesn't work. They offered a "free year of membership" to us to compensate for the issues.....except what good is that if the band doesn't work.
UPDATE2 -- FYI, this company is deleting user comments on Facebook and blocking people that post replies that are not positive. Seriously, go read the FB page and see the comments. They've left a couple...but mine and several others have been deleted (and mine were not controversial or offensive). I posted a reply stating that my comment was deleted and was then blocked. This company is not ethical.
Here's the 3 options they give you for a "fix".
Directly from their website:
-----------------------------------
Option 1: At your expense, return your band + charger to Pivotal Corporation (400 Union Street #400, Seattle WA 98101) and include your full name and original order # for tracking purposes. While we can't guarantee a replacement device will do the trick, we are happy to send one (1) replacement device within the first three months of 2015.
Option 2: At your expense, return your band + charger to Pivotal Corporation (400 Union Street #400, Seattle WA 98101) and include your full name and order # for tracking purposes. Upon receipt, we will refund your order, including the original shipping and handling fee.
Option 3: You can continue using your band knowing it may reset from time to time -or- you may also deactivate your account within the Pivotal Living mobile app and gift your Pivotal Tracker 1 and remaining membership to a family member, friend, or colleague.
Please note, since the band resets are driven by static electricity from our member's home and office environments and not caused by the band's hardware/firmware itself, Pivotal Living cannot guarantee that sending out one (1) replacement product will resolve the reset issue itself.
-----------------------------------
Please don't give this company your money. Think about it this way. If you buy a better band it will cost you $10/month for a year vs. the $1/month for a year. And you get a better band, better support and a better app. I get that $12 is $12....but their handling of this mess has been the worst I have ever seen for a product (except for my very first Samsung Galaxy Tablet).
Original Review
This band has the potential to really shake up the tracker market. The price point is incredible. Seriously incredible. The app is nice. The company's direction is admirable. But there are some issues, mainly the band resetting, that makes this a NO BUY right now. If the band gets fixed and works properly, there is no reason that they can't take a huge share of this market. But my recommendation is to avoid the band until the company addresses some issues (band resetting, app not syncing, etc.).
Quick Thought: The company rushed out the band to meet the XMas deadline. There were clearly not ready on many levels (website, support, app, band issues). As others have said, I feel like we were Beta Testers. And currently, there is almost no support from them.
Two Major Issues:
1. Band Resetting -- mine (and others) band resets randomly, almost every day though. It resets band to 12:00am and you lose all your data that hasn't synced. Now I think that this is a known issue to them even before launch (speculation). There is a "Reset time on band" in Settings. Why would that be there? Why isn't this checked during a sync? It's likely because it's a problem with the band. That concerns me since the CEO has stated (in someone else's review) the firmware is not upgrade-able. So what will be the fix??
I have emailed them 3 times for support, as well as posted on their Facebook page: no response. Many people are posting the same thing. No response.
2. App syncing -- This was a major issue at first. Less issues now. They blamed "server overload". That makes me think the app is uploading data every time it syncs instead of once a day (which would be better in my opinion). Since there is no web interface, why does it need to upload the data?
Here's what I have owned: Jawbone Up (sent back as mine never worked right, neither did the replacements), FitBit Force (sent back due to rash), Fitbit One (still own it, love it, wish it was a "watch" like device, but I do love this thing), Virgin Health Pedometer (for work, don't use anymore)
PROS
Cost: $12 -- Amazing price for a tracker. If nothing else, this is the selling point (if it would work properly).
Fit: Very comfortable. I barely notice that it is on. More comfortable than the Fitbit. It's a bit hard to clasp due to the design, but not too bad.
App: Pretty and mostly functional. It's a beautiful app, mostly well laid out (some UI issues that make it confusing).
Accuracy: I have been comparing this to my FitBit one everyday. It's close. Some days higher, sometimes lower. On a basic walk, they are pretty darn close.
Battery Life: Great. No issues at all. I've been seeing a week at a minimum.
Quality: What you would expect for $12...(at first you think it's amazing for the price...that changes)
CONS:
Band Resetting: I and others have mentioned this. Randomly, the band will reset band to 12:00am. Your time is wrong and the data is gone. I have lost a lot of data and sleep data because of this. This is the reason I am not wearing it today and consider it mostly useless. Perhaps mine is a lemon. But given that I'll have days with no issue, then 3 in a row where it resets several times....the reliability is low. Very low.
This issues is the biggest issue here. It makes it not usable. And given the # of people saying that this is an issue....that's a big, big problem for the company. I cannot recommend this band while this problem exists.
Band Quality: About what you'd expect for $12. Really, when you buy a FitBit you are disappointed (I paid $$ for this piece of plastic). Here, at least it's what you'd expect. The plastic gets scratched very easily. Very easily. The face of mine is very scratched up. Usable yes. Do I expect this band to last the year or two they say it will? No.
Company Support: None so far. They have done a few Facebook posts. I have emailed 3 times in the last 2 weeks. No answer. I'm sure they are busy and swamped, but I've lost a lot of respect that they can't address sometime in 2 weeks.
Display: Fine for indoors. Unreadable outside or in bright lights. I stress this: if you are going to use it outside, you will not be able to see the display. You can squint and look, put it under your coat...maybe you'll pick it up. But this will not replace your watch (if you wear one).
Instructions: Laughable. None at the release. Then they rushed out a few videos that were....well...rushed. It's seriously embarrassing for them to rush out a product and then not have instructions or an updated website. Again, it feels like we are beta testers.
App: Can be confusing at first (no instructions). No editing of data, which is a HUGE knock. Forget to put it in sleep mode? Sorry, can't edit it. The band reset itself and you need to edit the Sleep info? Nope. Previous day forgot to update the hydration? Gone.
Wake Up Feature: Rarely works. And when it does, you don't even really notice it....and if you do, sometimes moving the arm turns it off. This feature is a joke for me right now. My FitBit One works perfectly. This doesn't.
Band Firmware: it was stated by the CEO (in a response to a review) that this band cannot be updated. Well, that means if you have issues, you are stuck with them. The band reset issues? Likely permanent. Perhaps they will send out a new band to people? Seems an expensive fix.
Expectations: I put this here because perhaps we should have lowered our expectations on the product. I mean, for $12 what did we expect? Perhaps we should have expected major issues. Perhaps we should have expected no support. Perhaps we should have known that the band would likely not be quality you expect to last a year or two. So perhaps that con is on us the buyer.
SUMMARY
Again, I think that at the $12 price, this band/company could take a big jump into the market.
But a $12 price point means the margins are tight, the quality low. Maybe they are expecting many lemons for that range, and part of the strategy is to (at some point) replace the defective bands. Right now it seems that many bands are defective. I'm waiting for a replacement. Correction, I'm waiting for the company to respond to me so I can get a replacement. I''ll update this review if I ever get a new band.
My Recommendation: Wait
If the band gets updated (version 2 comes out), or a fix is announce, this could be a definite buy.
If you want a band right now that is guaranteed to work, spend more money and buy something else.
If you don't mind waiting, wait to see what happens with this company and the product. Give it a couple of months.
If you like to gamble and don't mind the possibility of having to mess with the band a lot, go for it.
If you don't mind possibly wasting $12, go for it.
