Very attractive looking but the bowl is too smooth
I needed to replace my molcajete and tried to find one on Amazon made of the traditional basalt stone. Unable to find one I settled on this one made of granite. I LOVE the way this one looks, it is very attractive. I also like the size of the bowl. It comfortably holds 2.5 cups with plenty of room to work whatever is in the bowl. It was easy to season because the bowl was already so smooth. And this for me is the problem and the reason I will have to buy a different one. The bowl is just too smooth. My old one was very porous so it made quick work of tomato skins, roasted chili’s skins etc by either breaking them into small chunks for salsa or smooth pulp for sauces depending on how much you worked them. With this smooth granite bowl the skins remained largely intact pretty much just scooping out the pulp and leaving large peices behindÿ. Aggressive grinding would finally break them down but everything ended up a with saucy consistency not good for chunky salsas. Also I didn’t like the shape of the pestle. The round end made my hand feel like a contorted claw by the time I was done. I will use this for an attractive peice to hold salsa or veges but for real day to day use I need to get a more authentic one.
