Our children absolutely enjoy this toy, it is colorful and fun! HOWEVER, the eyes are made out of PVC (polyvinyl chloride). PVC contains extremely toxic chemicals called phthalates that continue to offgas for years (the "new" smell) even past when your nose can detect it and are readily absorbed through skin contact directly into the bloodstream. New studies are showing very serious consequences to the hormonal systems of humans, especially children, when exposed to phthalates - the younger the child, the more it affects their small developing body. Needless to say, this is an incredibly irresponsible type of plastic to put on a toy such as this. Good news? There is a very simple solution to quickly get rid of the toxic PVC on this product & instantly remove the "new" smell it causes. Puncture the plastic eye hole with scissors and then cut with the scissors open (they will glide while cutting like good wrapping paper), go around the entire outer circle until the pvc is removed. There are no sharp edges since the pvc is softened with phthalates, and although this technique will not remove all of the toxins, it will significantly reduce your child's exposure since the remaining PVC is sewn into the eye seam of the caterpillar. Even better news? By removing the toxic PVC eyes, your child can now play hide n seek through a "window" - it looks exceptionally cute with their little head poking out! They can also learn to throw bean bags through the opening, practicing coordination and aim. By removing the bad stuff from this product, it actually makes it more fun alongside being healthier too!
