Plastic in contact with boiling water!
I have to admit the Breville's concept was very appealing to me in regards to a high end tea maker. After careful consideration I decided it would be worth the money compared to all the other kettles. The advantages I understood were the great design and quality put into this machine and of course the brew strength and multiple temperature settings. However, I was greatly saddened to find a plastic cap on the basket, and the components of the basket to be plastic. Also the Glass Jug portion of the kettle, specifically the top has a silicone seal.
To many, I admit this may not discourage them, however I know Breville's lower model with various temps had a plastic water level reader that contained BPA. Despite an email to Breville I have not received word or assurance that the plastic basket components are BPA free. The only reason I would justify spending so much money on a tea kettle would be for assurance that my tea is chemical free and brewed correctly not just for taste but for health purposes as well . This model had great potential and it is disheartening to find it failed so close to the finish line with adding cheap plastic to its basket and lid. At $250 Breville could have continued with the high quality design. What's the point of spending more money on loose tea for the health benefits and taste if your tea is saturated with toxins and a plastic taste?!?!? I love the idea and effort but my opinion is that they dropped the ball right before the finish line.
