1080p not full 1080p, close but no cigar
I had hoped to buy a device that would simply connect my computer to my hdtv just like using an hdmi cable, but without the wires. Modern wireless tech is far, far more than fast enough, right? Unfortunately, they still haven't managed to do it. Here's a comparison. ** HDMI Cable ** - Hdmi Port - Plugged into the "pc" hdmi slot on my tv (the one with the lowest latency and no overscan issues) - Lag - mouse moves at pretty much the same speed as the screen, might be a very tiny small amount less responsive. - Lag - averages 20-30ms - Resolution - exactly the same as the laptop screen - Video - plays just like it does on the laptop screen ** Actiontec ScreenBeam ** - Hdmi port - Plugged into same hdmi port, so same environment from the tv - Lag - lag is noticeable, but not severe. It's unacceptable for using the tv as a regular monitor for doing serious work all day on, and completely unacceptable for gaming, but for it's intended use for me - showing pics, video, and browsing the web with an audience - it would have been fine. - Lag - averages 111ms-180ms - Resolution - if you put text on the screen, the resolution is **CLEARLY** less than 1080p. Normal size text is blocky but barely readable. Unusually small text is not readable at all. - Video - video framerate slows down vs the computer screen, and sometimes there are very minor artifacts. But even at just 720p @ 24fps the video was slightly jerky or looked like there was something a little wrong with it. * I measured lag in ms by running a millisecond timer, mirroring the screen, then taking a pic with both the laptop screen and the tv monitor in the picture at the same time. I did this several times, the amount given is the rough average of several different shots. I also set my laptop's display to 720p and the input lag is the same, and video is better for the framerate but still not as good as my laptop screen (and again - we're talking 24fps, as slow as video goes where it's watchable). Bottom line - this device comes close, but doesn't quite make it. It transmits in something slightly less than 1080p, input lag isn't terrible but it's definitely there, and video ends up with a lower framerate. This adapter is probably good if all you want to do is display pictures on the tv (you don't notice the resolution loss, at least I didn't when I tried it), but otherwise it's (unfortunately) just not quite there.
