Day Two: PS4 Displays Flashing Blue Light of Death
My PlayStation 4 died on November 16, 2013: the day after I received it. As soon as I plugged it in, on day one, I was immediately concerned because the console's light was flashing blue, but there was no video output to my TV. So I held the power button for ten seconds, forcing the PS4 to turn off. When I rebooted it, it was outputting picture. So I figured I was in the clear. Since then I've downloaded and installed the Day One firmware update. That was on launch day. Today is day two. The PS4 was on for several hours today. Until suddenly tonight the picture died and a high-pitched whine started coming out of my speakers. The PS4 is flashing blue, and no video is being output to my TV. I've tried multiple resets. It won't boot into safe mode. It just flashes blue. That is all it will do. This problem is clearly very widespread. I'll be returning this to Amazon. Note: as others have reported, Amazon's packaging for my PS4 was totally inadequate. The PS4 was on the bottom of the shipping box with no padding under it. All of the air-packed plastic bags were on top of the PS4's box, which is not especially useful. ** UPDATE #1 11/17/2013 I tried the PS4 again on Sunday morning. Still no picture and no sound. Still not ability to boot into safe mode. Still a blue pulsing light. But I noticed that the TV displays, at the top of the screen "Player 1 (PlayStation 4)". That information is obviously being retrieved from the PS4. So there is some communication between the PS4, the TV and the receiver that sits between both of them. For the record, I am in Boston. It will be interesting to learn if these problems are isolated to certain part of the country, maybe related to a batch of consoles emanating from specific Amazon distribution centers. ** UPDATE #2 11/17/2013 I spent 80 minutes on the phone waiting to get through to Sony Support. I was finished with them after 92 minutes. If your PS4 dies after you've already associated it with your PSN account, your life is probably going to be a little more miserable. Here's why: During setup, you probably activated your PS4 as your PRIMARY SYSTEM. When your PS4 dies, you will be unable to disassociate this PS4 from your account, and you will be unable to deactivate it as your PRIMARY SYSTEM. Deactivating it requires booting it up and deactivating it through the settings menu. Once your system dies or otherwise becomes inaccessible, you will be unable to set up a new PS4 as your primary (because your dead system is already registered as the primary), and you will have to call Sony to get the dead system deactivated. This has ratifications for automatic PS+ downloads, and for the ability of other household members to use the games you've downloaded. I have a second PS4 which I have now activated as my primary system, but could not do this without spending 90 minutes on the phone in order to get Sony to deactivate the faulty system. A coffin is on its way for the first system. I'm told the replacement process should take about two weeks. Finally: I am so glad I had the presence of mind, last night, to manually sync my saved games to the cloud. I have recovered those saves and downloaded them to my second PS4. If I hadn't manually synced last night - before the system died - I would have lost hours of progress on the games I'd been playing on Saturday.
