★☆☆☆☆
Great idea, terrible execution and reliability.
This was the worst tech purchase I have made. I am a devout minimalist and agree wholeheartedly with Punkt's philosophy of minimalism and removing distraction. This phone is beautifully "designed", but as a piece of technology, it is terrible. The build quality is shocking. For close to $300, you would expect beautiful build quality. I'm a light phone user but within a month of purchase, the side volume button fell off because it is only connected by the tiniest plastic ring, and the USB charger cover no longer closes and one side of the cover cables have broken. For those who do not bother to read the FAQ's, it is made in China. The headset speaker for phone conversations is absolutely terrible for 2016 and I have had to stop using it for business calls as people have commented on the bad sound quality of my voice; listening to voices there is a distinct distortion in the 1k-2k (Hz) regions, as well an overall bad response about 500Hz. The operating system is a wrapper around MediaTek and is what I expected. That being said, there are bugs in several parts (including in typing messages). I reported one of these bugs to Punkt in May 2016 and was told that they were aware of it, but they had no plans to fix it at this time. 12 months have past and they still have not fixed any of the bugs present in the software. However, the most frustrating part for me, as a US customer, is it is ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE to find 2G service. I am in a major US city (one of the five largest in the country), and AT&T turned off 2G. So I switched to T-Mobile. Now, while T-Mobile ostensibly supports 2G, there coverage amounts to only a few places in the city. I don't get any 2G service within 15 blocks of my apartment (tested), and after 3 months of use, I only knew of a handful of areas in the entire city where I would get enough service to make a decent telephone call. Now, this is not directly Punkt's fault - but I think there needs to be a serious disclaimer regarding using this in the US where 2G bandwidth has almost completely been converted to 4G. Between my family and friends, we bought 6 MP01's in early 2016, and we were all forced to stop using them within a few months because of build quality issues, and coverage. It's a great conversation piece when its sitting at home because it is beautifully designed, and Punkt put some effort in there, but you get the impression that they just licensed some 2005 phone from some Chinese manufacturer and put it in a pretty cover. That pretty back cover, by the way, flakes off very easily and now looks "shiny" and "spotty" after a few months of use.
