Tech savvy people need not apply....
So my background is that I have been in IT for over 15 years and I now work in the cybersecurity sector. I wanted to purchase a product that not only was a router but had security features that would help protect my home network. I purchased the Gryphon after reading some positive reviews and figured I had this concern in the bag.
First off, the router loses DNS every day. There is a period of about 10 min where the network is unable to do anything. Since I am limited in what settings I can change on the router, I basically have to wait for this time to pass which inconvenient since I work from home. I reached out to the vendor and all I got back is that we are looking into it.
Second, I understand that removal of the web UI helps to secure the router from attacks, but the app that replaces the UI needs some serious work. I had to do some digging to even be able to set up static IP addresses and even then they were limited in the range I could do them in. I would suggest making the app look like the UI of a router would be to make it easier to find what you are looking for.
Third, URL blocking is a joke. This is basically DNS and that's it. Oh, and you have to do it per device, there are not options to blanket block a website for the entire network. The fact that IP addresses cannot be blocked seems to be an overlook from my opinion. Most of your C2 servers will either use DNS or specific IP addresses, so why not allow the option? The response from the vendor was again we are looking into that.
I have opted to discontinue use of this device on my network and I moved to an Untangle appliance. It cost me only $100 more than the Gryphon, but it brings to the table what Gryphon cannot do (supposedly it can in the future) and bring in more options that can help better secure your network.
