Quality and reliability are suffering as design changes to save cost
I have used Havahart traps for over 20 years. My friends call me Dr. Doolittle because i have caught just about everything, including a lost cat for someone... I was very disappointed by my last purchase. As all companies look for a way to increase profits, it usually comes at trying to reduce costs. This leads to quality and reliability issues. The metal doors are thinner, there is less metal used on the frame of this cage and key components of howe the trap work are stamped out of metal. I have never been so frustrated as I watched a chipmunk basically mock me as he banged on the cage to pop the door open. I watched another one push the door open after the latching mechanism didn't catch properly due to the cheaply stamped door catch tab. I have also noticed the door doors get caught up on the sides of the cage when they come down because the frame twists or warps a little bit... I am so sorry I loaned my original 20 year old unit to someone because it worked flawlessly. It was a solid and simple piece of engineering that surely would have last me a lifetime.
In Havahart's defense, I called their customer service line to discuss issues I was having... They listened very intently and understood my concerns. They are sending me a new unit and I will give it another try, but I am concerned it will just be the same old same old... I'll probably search online market places for an older version with more robust frame and manufacturing elements.
