Potentially harmful content for younger readers
I've read and enjoyed every book written by Jodi Picoult...until this one. While there are many interesting aspects to the story, some of the content in "Mad Honey" worries me as I feel it could be potentially harmful for younger readers. SPOILER ALERT! I do not have an issue with one of the main characters being a trans woman...trans girl, really. I understand the difference between sexual identity and gender and understand how people may feel a need to change their gender identity to fit their strong feelings. I do question some of the medical details. The main character Lily when transitioning from a boy, is given puberty blockers before age 12 and has sex reassignment surgery at age 17. The doctor character who did the sex reassignment surgery explains the importance of puberty blockers being given at a young age and approves of sex reassignment surgery in young people. Children are impressionable and exploring many feelings about how they want to be in the world. Young people are often confused about their feelings and regarding their identity and are known to flip flop on feelings and identity. More and more medical science is showing the potential physical and emotional dangers of starting puberty blockers too young and performing gender reassignment surgery on young people. Even in a fictional story, I feel Jodi Picoult is irresponsible in presenting the use of puberty blockers and sex reassignment surgery in very young people as OK and medically and psychologically appropriate.
