Predictably Bad: five movies on one DVD is not a good idea!
A bucket of movies for $6.99. No one will be surprised that these are not the good stuff. That would be Criterion. No, these are what could be got cheaply. So how bad can things get? Pretty Bad if you are intending to watch these movies on a big screen. You know you're in trouble when even the stock graphics from the studio are slightly out of focus. But on my laptop they're at least bearable. Watching the movies on a computer gives you the ability to resize the screen. Something that is unbearable on a 1080p screen may be watchable in a smaller window. You can't do that with a regular TV!
The virtue of this package is the ability to see a few things that are not out there at all. Everybody seems to have "D.O.A.", "Scarlet Street", or "The Stranger". But that other disk has "Quicksand", "Whirlpool", "Shock", "Port of New York" & "They Made Me a Criminal". I just did a quick check on Netflix. They have "Whirpool" and "Shock". They have "They Made me a Criminal", but in a different compendium of three movies, not guaranteed to be better than this version. They have "Quicksand", but it turns out to be a totally different movie. This happens. So.... This may be your only way to see the version of "Quicksand" with Mickey Rooney. "Port of New York" has Yul Brenner, and I'm really surprised that this wasn't enough to keep the movie around. Final Judgment: Predictably bad versions. Almost anything will be better, especially if the movie is alone on a DVD. But there are those two rarities, bad pressings and all.
