Instant red flags
Within the first 5 minutes things are said that contradicts statements made by RJ explicitly. Its unbelievable how quickly I went from excited to cringing. I made it about 3/4 through the first episode before I couldn't watch it anymore. I gave it a 2 because maybe the rest will surprise me but it definitely isnt being built on a strong foundation. To be clear I wasn't expecting a shot for shot remake of the books, and I understand they need to take liberties to convert it to show format but...the bones need to be the same. I wouldn't call it loosely based on the books. I would say it seems put together by someone that read the books once 20 years ago then had his assistant read some clifnotes and fill him in. They had a lot to live up to considering many WoT fans have read the series multiple times (I've probably read/listened to it 10+ at this point) and it seems to have really fallen flat. My only hope is if it gets renewed for a second season they'll get it all together. Even RJ had to flesh things out some after EotW. Edit: I can admit when I'm wrong. I've been watching it with my wife and trying to explain the subtleties to someone who hasn't read the book is really rough. The show is fun. Edit 2 12/13/21: Episode 4 was pretty good. But I need to change my review back to 1 based solely on the fact that 5 and 6 were dumpster fires and probably won't be watching it anymore. I really really wanted, and was willing to, give it a chance but no. You can't have a whole episode dedicated to a character no one cares about that wasn't even in the books. Characters themselves are changed. I struggle to find a single character that feels true to their book counterparts. Moraine probably, maybe Nyneve. Thom was pretty great. All three were not remotely close to the books though story wise. Again I don't need a shot for shot remake but I do need good storytelling and at least some loyalty to the books. At this point it's just fan fiction.
