False copyright errors prevent video capture from many VHS tapes
I've been using PowerDirector as part of my business since version 10. Part of my business includes transferring customer VHS tapes to DVD. Although I feel the software itself is pretty good compared to others I have tried, I have to rate it 1-star for Cyberlink's support (or lack of support).
What has started happening recently when transferring video from VHS tapes into PowerDirector is an error pops up that says "This movie is copyright protected. Recording is prohibited." This immediately causes PowerDirector to stop capturing the video. The problem is that this is happening on home videos, not copyrighted movies like you would expect. I searched for a solution to this problem and unfortunately found via the Cyberlink forums that this problem started happening more than five years ago when they introduced Macrovision detection in their software. I am all for copyright protection being built into the software... However, when the algorithm that detects copyrighted material is poorly designed and causes home videos to trigger it, that becomes a big problem for me. If you do a quick Google search you will see that PowerDirector users have been complaining about this since 2009, but Cyberlink refuses to do anything about it. Version after version they release still contains this flawed copyright detection. Since I couldn't find a solution via their forums I decided to open a support ticket to see if they had a solution that perhaps wasn't published on their forums. Here is their solution in their response, word for word:
"With regards to your concern, I would like to inform you that the error message shows up majorly because the old Macrovision copy protection, and can be triggered if the source video has a bad signal. There are some discussion in CyberLink forum. An end user provided a solution in the last discussion thread. I would suggest you to follow the below link and check if its works."
The link they provided points to a forum post of a user complaining about the flawed macrovision detection in their software, and the solution is to use freeware software from another company to capture the video, and then import the captured video back into PowerDirector. Seriously! Your solution is for me to use another companies software to do what I paid for YOUR software to do. That is completely unacceptable. By the way, the post they linked to is an older post that recommends a software product that isn't even freeware anymore. So their solution is that I should now pay for other software to capture the video, then use PowerDirector to edit the content and record the disc.
I have had to use other software to capture VHS tapes the last few days because of this flaw. I have tried a few different ones, including one from Honestech called VHS to DVD. No other software I have used has had any false copyright errors come up. So if these other cheaper capture programs can tell the difference between copyrighted material and home videos, why can't the more expensive PowerDirector software do the same? I believe since this problem is only experienced by a small number of users who actually use the software for transferring VHS tapes that Cyberlink has chosen to completely ignore the flaw rather than fix it. How else can you explain the same problem happening for more than 5-years of yearly software releases? I'm very disappointed in Cyberlink to say the least.
