I put them in the garbage after six weeks.
I purchased a pack of five of these and was hopeful they would be a great replacement for waterproof matches in an emergency situation. No. Not even close. I weighed (with a balance capable of 0.01 gram precision reading) all five metal matches without fuel and fully fueled. I let them sit undisturbed on my cool basement workbench for about six weeks and checked their weights at several intervals. Two of them lost a significant amount of fuel 65% and 39%) over a 48 day period. The other three lost smaller amounts of fuel (8%, 6% and 1%). In other words, you can't rely on these to retain their fuel for any long term storage. I found lighting them very difficult. They spark, but rarely actually light the end of the metal match wick. Talk about an exercise in frustration. If these were regular matches, you'd think they were old and wet. I would like to know if any manufacturer can guarantee that lighter fluid will not leak/evaporate from their product. If they can't guarantee that, they will eventually run out of fuel and become useless. Why do they sell a product that needs regular refilling, even when you don't use it? Who's going to be bothered with remembering to refill them? A regular cigarette lighter is more predictable. The overall quality of this product is somewhat cheap. I would rather purchase one really well built item (think of a nice stainless steel zippo lighter) instead of five flimsy items. Screwing the metal match into the metal container felt imprecise and sloppy. You can break the small metal clip with your fingers with a modest effort. Think about a survival situation in the cold woods, or camping on a weekend. Would you rather be under the illusion that you have a fire source (metal match that really does not work because it is out of fuel), or have nothing to light a fire and clearly understand that you have nothing to start a fire? There is a real false sense of security with this product. I put these in the garbage can ... where they belong. It is not worth my time to return them to the manufacturer. If the manufacturer wants my business first, not my money first, they'll produce a high quality, reliable, safe and easy to light product. If they want my money first, they'll keep peddling this substandard product. They either don't know what they are doing (making an inferior product) or they do know what they are doing and really don't care about quality and functionality. Stating the product has a rubber o-ring gives you the illusion that it does not leak fuel. It does leak fuel. Not worth the high risk of them not lighting when needed.
