This is NOT like the poncho I was issued. Maybe some of the other vets who commented are younger.
I have attached a photo of this new one on top of my old darker one.
My old one seemed to be thicker and had some rubbery component to it, so it was heavier and quieter.
There was also some fabric visible in the edging to add strength. The old rivets and snaps seem thicker and stronger.
I am NOT saying the old one was superior; maybe technology has changed and the new one is lighter and better. I don't know. I am not calling anyone a liar. Maybe they were issued this newer, lighter, crunchier poncho. I don't know.
I am saying this new one seems cheaper, thinner, weaker - but if it performs just as well, then it is actually superior. I'll get back to you after 10-years of experience with it. :-)
Update. The fabric tore the first time I tried to unsnap it! There is no way to repair this. My old poncho has been snapped & unsnapped hundreds of times over 40 years of going to the BWCA and did not rip like this. Go elsewhere.
