Not at all appropriate for children! Racist, misogynistic, violent, and filthy!
I ordered the Horrible Histories Blood Curdling Box of Books to use in my World History lessons. I ordered the boxed set ISBN: 978-1-407177-61-8 from a vendor on Amazon.com and paid $42 for the books last summer. I just found time to review the books before beginning to use them in my teaching. I am appalled to discover how much racism, violence, misogyny, and inappropriate content (nude figures) is depicted in these books. I began by blacking out or tearing out the pages with objectionable content from the books. However, as I started reading through the books, it appears that they ALL have material that is NOT age appropriate. Now I am stuck with a set of books that I cannot return any more, that I feel disgusted by. Especially in this age of mass murderers walking into schools and places of worship and killing innocent people, I believe book publishers need to be more responsible about their age ratings for the books they publish. Just a few examples...the book about Aztecs had illustrations of their priests with human skins wrapped around their necks (an image I wish I could erase from my mind now that I’ve read/seen corresponding 'funny' illustration of it!). The book with US history in it showed African American slaves hanging from trees... How is that funny? In the Stormin Normans book, on page 12, there is a story about how William goes into a woman's room, beats her up, and then forces her to marry him! The paragraph then ends by saying that this story is probably not even true! Then why have it in the book? Just to plant the seeds of domestic abuse against women in the minds of impressionable boys? Then on page 117, there is a blurb about how Cistercian monks, kept 'their naughty bits from getting over heated'. Your website gives this book an age rating of grades 3-5. I am shocked that Scholastic thinks that 7-9 year old children should be learning about how monks kept their private parts cool. These books are beyond disgusting. I admit, there are lots of amusing, interesting, and funny anecdotes and illustrations, but the books are peppered with so much inappropriate material that it is not worth risking tarnishing the minds of children just for some laughs.
