The companies selling these gates have absolutely no idea about the safety of their products. Under no circumstances are any gates having bent bars (especially in the corners of the gates where they mount to the walls) safe for any smaller pets or animals. Here's why: The bends in the vertical bars create a larger opening for smaller animals to put their heads into. The larger gaps that their heads fit into lead directly to a pinch points right next to them that causes the animal to become trapped and strangle to death. And what's worse about these designs are that the farther you have to screw the mounting bolts out to secure these kind of gates to the wall or door frame, the greater the size of the gap a pets' head can fit into. Now even more pets can be strangled to death by them. I learned this the hard way when, to my horror, I came upon one of my beloved pets that hung herself in one of these. Her head was lodged just below one of the top corner gaps where her legs could no longer reach the floor. She wasn't tall enough to reach the upper gap. I believe she entered the gap at the bottom, became stuck and fought her way 3/4 of the way up the gate before she was no longer able to move. what shocked me even more was that I was just in the next room when this happened--and I didn't hear a thing! The pinch point was so tight around her neck that it crushed her throat to the point that she wasn't even able to cry out for help. So please, please learn from my mistake and never use a gate like this that has anything but every single bar in them being completely straight up and down (not horizontal). And if you would, please help me pass this information along to others and voice this concerns to all manufactures who continue to carelessly design their gates with these strangulation hazards for no other purpose than aesthetics, or companies that sell them without thinking.
