★★☆☆☆
unforgivable design flaws
I have been using this keyboard for a few days and here are some thoughts:
- Price. This mini keyboard is priced as the same as regular MX Keys about released two years ago. Given current inflation rate and all the supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, the price could be justified, right? Well, I don't think so. First, this keyboard no longer supports the unifying receiver and you have to spend additional $15 to buy the new BOLT one, which is not even available as of Dec 2021. You can argue that it might use a better technology but there is no reason you can't make it backward compatible for folks. Indeed, for whatever reason, when you spend almost $100 with Logitech and they still don't think you deserve a tiny USB adapter. Second, Logitech made lots of cost-saving decisions already when "designing" it. Read below.
- Feedback. Personally I can feel this mini versions not as "clicky" as MX Keys and the keys bounce back slower and softer than MX Keys. I still think it is acceptable if I've never used MX Keys. Please don't take my words for it since this could just be the fact that this is a new keyboard. I'm curious what other MX Keys owners think about it.
- Layout. The keycap selection makes ZERO sense to me. First, do you really need three different keys to connect? Couldn't you just use one to cycle through? If this is really necessary why I only have one button under my MX Master 3 mouse? Similarly, one key to cycle keyboard backlight level is really enough. It really seems that Logitech just doesn't wanna to manufacture some separate keys to save costs when they can use the same keycaps from MX Keys. Second, I'm also using this keyboard with my iPad, so I can accept emoji key but a dictation key, seriously? Two Ctrl keys? Sure you can program them with their software but you can't change the keycaps. Third, Logitech claimed that this keyboard for coders, but who gotta be ok with those tiny arrow keycaps? I just can't really feel the confidence to type them every time. You can at least keep the full-sized left and right keys especially when you decide to not include Home and End. For me, I really wish Logitech could keep the full-sized arrow keys and just drop the Numpad from MX Keys, like their G PRO keyboard layout. If they really wanna to keep it small, I really wish they could consider a similar layout like Keychron K3.
- Mac version vs Mac version. I just couldn't help to think how Logitech treats PC users as second-class consumers. First, they only sell a separate "For Mac" version and not "For Windows" model. Second, the layout inherited from MacBook earlier keyboard design. Third, if you think about it. Right now the whole Mac product line all has Bluetooth. You perhaps are only forced to buy that new USB connector if you use a PC desktop. Logitech should really just sell one model and then give the user some keycaps so that they can switch to MX Keys for Mac. Actually, they could just add a touchbar.
- Software. As someone who has been using Logitech's products for a long time, the supporting software has always been mediocre at best. It is very confusing. For example, In Logitech Options, you have to access to a device page to access the option to update the software. Why? It is not like a firmware update. For whatever reason, you can't set your own threshold for low battery notification. You have to stop your working or whatever you are doing since your keyboard is gotta be dead soon. Why can't you let the users decide for themselves, let's say 20% maybe?
- I have no idea why Logitech can't let Amazon sell all color options, including the black one. They did the same thing to MX Keys and now this mini version. They don't even bother to explain it, and the whole thing is really confusing.
