Unnecessary language
With book reviews I tend to write from a feelings standpoint, I leave the mini-synopsis to others. I’m going to come right out and say the book didn’t move me much. Tons and tons of heavy subject matter that just seemed weighed down further by the scenery that was (to me) overly described. Maine in summer, prepare to read a good deal of the different hues that water can take on. I can also say that the amount of f bombs used was unnecessary for the little dramatic effect it had. One or two to make a point, yes but then it becomes distracting and distasteful. I lost count after the use of c*k and S*t was thrown in. The family depicted in the novel (mother, father and their four children) had absolutely no ability to communicate properly. How you can grow up and not be able to simply tell your adult siblings your feelings, purposely hiding them is almost developmentally stunted and odd. There is good deal of tension running through the whole of it. The mood of anxiety just pours out. Talk of abortion in just the most heinous of ways. “Who’s the daddy? You’re gonna have it, right? Cause don’t get me all excited about this uncle crap if you’re just gonna flush it.” I was especially upset with the passage where the oldest brother just hates on his wife for being a “slut” and himself for being in a “long line of deranged freaks who’d defiled his pretty wife in ways that he wished he didn’t know”. And further muses to himself that “dating a slut is great” but then goes on to chastise himself that men are “supposed to f*k sluts, not marry them”. I’m not feeling especially good reading this and don’t care how good the writing is, or how talented the author may be. I can’t recommend this, not for me at least. SPOILER: lots of unresolved sexual identity issues
