Two stars because Sam Elliot does a great impersonation of himself
Watched the first (free) episode -- not worth spending money to see more. Here is why:
As a historian I'm acutely aware of the trials and tribulations of westward migration in North America. However, the lawlessness and violence was no where near the level depicted here. The suggested reality of 1883 is laughably absurd.
I happen to be an immense fan of Sam Elliot, but his performance in 1883 is a cookie cutter version of every other performance he's given, going all the way back to 1976's Once an Eagle. Sadly, Elliot's performance ranks best among all the others, who are playing at the ridiculous stereotype of western pioneers a la the period's dime novels.
I am not a prude; having served in the Marines for 20 years I know all the spoken obscenities, most in multiple languages. Notwithstanding, I don't care to have them thrown at me unnecessarily and completely out of character for the period. Same goes for gratuitous nipples. I realize the producers are trying to cater to the broadest audience by use of unnecessary epithets and nudity, but sometimes it might be laudable to speak to a more sophisticated audience, while raising the less discerning to a higher plane. But, no, I get it -- this is just another form of predatory capitalism that will say and show anything for a buck.
