Initially the jar worked as advertised and really was attractive hanging from an inside branch on my grapefruit tree. It didn't take long for the birds to discover and use it for drinking and bathing. Wanting to avoid the water becoming contaminated due to Phoenix's extreme heat, I didn't fill the jar completely and every other day washed the jar in hot soapy water with a while vinegar rinse. I used bottled water exclusively. After a few months I noticed the threaded rings of the glass jar had small rusted areas that couldn't be removed. It became harder to screw the base onto the jar because of the resistance. Then the metal coating started flaking until it was coming off in big pieces, leaving the areas rusted. I know I wouldn't drink out of a rusty container, so I stopped using the waterer. Now I have a pretty blue mason jar that can't be used for anything else and a very rusted out base. I was surprised not more customers wrote reviews with this complaint. Just now I found a replacement base on Amazon, but am concerned about the same thing happening again. I'm wondering if there is some sort of non toxic liquid coating that could be brushed on before use to water proof the metal.
