UNSAFE--Critical Bolt Snapped in Half During Assembly
This crib is dangerous. My baby just arrived, and while we were assembling the crib today the bolt holding two of the sides together snapped in half while we were screwing it in. I was using an allen wrench, not any sort of power tool, and wasn't over-tightening (I'm recovering from a c-section, and probably couldn't use much force even if I tried). Half of the bolt stayed in the crib and the other half fell out in my hand. Without the bolt, the crib is not stable and the side railing is not secured. I've assembled a lot of Ikea furniture with allen wrenches and I've never had anything like this happen. The metal on this crib's bolts is extremely brittle, and I fear that the other bolts may have similar weaknesses as well. I'm thankful that the bolt broke before my baby was in it, but I'm very concerned that an older baby could snap the bolts by putting even a little force on the top of the railings and be seriously injured, or else that a bolt could just give way under the ordinary weight it's expected to bear.
Amazon's nonchalance when I contacted them about the safety hazard is further cause for concern.
This crib is manufactured exclusively for Amazon, so Amazon is ultimately responsible for the crib's safety. I told the representative that the bolt had snapped in two during assembly, and he told me that these issues "rarely happened" (which implies that it's happened before--this should never happen!), that he was sorry for my "inconvenience" (not the problem, although I did have to send my husband out to buy a replacement tonight), and that he could promise that the replacement crib would be safe (um, how? wasn't I promised that this one was safe? is he going to personally test the strength of the bolts?). After an hour, I was told I could get a refund or a replacement (no way I'm letting my baby sleep in this crib) if I disassembled the crib, bought a new box, repacked it and mailed it back. Oh, and I was also offered a $5 gift card for my "inconvenience." Amazon's system then disconnected me from the chat with the representative.
Amazon did not seem to understand that this was a serious safety hazard for a product they're ultimately responsible ensuring for the safety of as the exclusive seller. I have zero confidence that this problem was reported to anyone higher up the chain of command than this very low level and clueless customer service representative. Amazon has shown more concern for past problems I've had with an order of shampoo that leaked a bit than with their own crib that is clearly hazardous. I reported the problem to the CPSC, and I hope that they're able to make more headway than I was.
I've never written a product review before, but I feel compelled to warn other parents not to buy this crib. Yes, the styling of the crib is cute and modern and mimics more expensive ones, but it's cheap because it uses inferior materials, lacks quality control, and may have deeper design flaws that pose real dangers to babies. I'm a new mom, and it's hard to express how distressing it was when the bolt crumbled during assembly. It's hard to write about it without crying and thinking about what could have happened. A crib is the one place babies are unsupervised that has to be the most safe. I wouldn't ever leave my baby in this crib.
