Sad To Say - This Book Sucked - Giving 2 Stars Out of Loyalty
Lifelong loyal King fan. Despite the fact that I haven't much liked anything he's written since about Joyland. Later was okay. This particular book... where to start? I guess I'll start with Trump, which is where King starts, with the political snarking beginning in the first few pages and continuing on and on.... Trump, Trump, Trump, particularly disgusting reference to Melania, Trump, Trump, Hillary Clinton (still beating the dead horse that is the 2016 Presidential Election). O. M. G. Beyond that... anyone who thinks this is a good sniper book clearly hasn't read any actually good sniper books (go read any early Stephen Hunter... who King references in this book). Anyone who thinks this is a good crime book... uh... it's not. Go read any well-known crime writer. There are many to choose from. The pacing is bad, the plotting is a joke - starts off good, then gets ridiculous. At 20% I texted my brother "Hey, unbelievable, the new SK is pretty good". A day later I texted my brother "Disregard. It sucks". After the plot breaks down, the main character morphs into some completely different character. The "sidekick/bizarre semi-love interest" is unappealing and weird. The bad guys are laughably two dimensional. The book is filled with odd/outdated pop culture references - example: 25 year olds quoting from Deliverance and listening to Foghat. As if any 25 year olds have ever heard of either. Cringe-worthy tech references such as "he powered up his cell phone", shopping on Amazon with one-day delivery, clickbait, google, etc. Weird cultural phenomena, i.e. neighborhood BBQ's - I don't know a single person who has participated in a neighborhood BBQ ever. I think those went out circa 1950. A new-to-the-neighborhood adult man playing monopoly with neighborhood children in the basement of one child's home, unaccompanied by any other adult. SERIOUSLY? In this day and age? And back to Trump, Trump, Trump. I'm actually really irritated with this one. The first 20% was pretty good, then I realized I'd been suckered by loyalty into reading absolute crap.
