Disappointed
I live down a country road where there are loose dogs, but in general we haven't had any run ins. Lots of close calls though so I decided I should buy something to protect my 2 dogs and I in case anything goes down. I purchased 2 canisters of Halt (though I debated buying the Halt II but it was double the price) and haven't walked my dogs until now. We were ambushed by a pack of 5 dogs and I sprayed 3 of the smaller, less aggressive ones. Of those 3, 2 ran off and wiped their faces on the ground and one I sprayed again. It then hung around, tried to approach again but I showed the can and it turned around. Dog 4 didn't come close enough to be sprayed, but dog 5 was a 100+ lb Rottweiler that advanced pretty straight forward and aggressively. I sprayed at about 7 ft away and he stopped. We tried to walk away and he started to come at us again so I sprayed him again at 4-5 ft. Didn't phase him and he continued to run at us. I continuously sprayed him IN THE EYES and saturated his face until he was up on us standing over one of my dogs who he then attacked. I hit him in the face and sprayed him directly in the eyes and he backed off but my dog got some Halt on his face (since the dog's face was drenched in spray) and in his eyes and he started screaming. The Rott followed his other buddies who were retreating back to their house and we were able to walk back home, bleeding and covered in pepper spray but ok. I also got some on my arms when I was fighting with the dog and it still burns, 20 minutes later and after I have scrubbed with soap and water. So here's my review. For dogs who may not really intend on killing your dog, it works pretty well. For a large, pain tolerant dog, who really wants to get in a fight I think bear mace or a gun would be a better option.
