★★☆☆☆
Mostly boring narratives, very little action/intrigue
33 of 34 people rated this novel as 5 star when I had purchased it. IT IS NOT! I should have listened to the one negative reply because they were right. Just speculating here but my guess is mostly family and friends gave it 5 stars. 351 pages of which less than 100 hold any kind of intrigue or action...and I am generous in saying 100. After initial 2 action/intriguing scenes, the novel becomes a dead weight which I had to really push myself to keep reading. I told myself I paid good money for it and the pace might pick up again. It did, at almost the half-way point, but not enough. I still had to force myself to keep reading. This novel is nothing but long-winded, boring, and repetitive narrative comprising the thoughts of 2 characters throughout. Concept about elves not being able to lie when speaking elvish is interesting but that's where the interest ends. After initial thoughts of characters are explored, as well as when encountering different situations, author seems persistent in repeating these thoughts again and again where a couple sentences would cover what we already know. Of the measly 5 or 6 intriguing/action scenes, 2 of them are interrupted in the middle with...you guessed it...several paragraphs/pages of the same boring repetitive narratives, stopping the action dead in it's tracks, before picking it up again. Big no-no! Preceding the final action scene is an unbelievable and ridiculous scene involving expedient dialog between the 2 main characters designed clearly to create an intended situation between them at the end of the first book. This scene could not have been more poorly written. The final action scene immediately following is rushed and combined with the intent of the poorly written preceding scene will leave the reader disappointed. It's simply unbelievable and basically points at one main character as being unbelievably stupid. Once the final action is completed, the author once again follows with several pages of long, boring narrative with ongoing dialog so widely dispersed it leaves you disgusted. Overall this novel could have been written in 150 pages and I'm willing to bet might make a decent novel if combined with book #2...after you delete mountains of repetitive narrative that surely exists in book #2. I do NOT recommend this novel to anyone and I definitely will NOT be buying the second book. Whatever you do, don't give this book to a new, young reader. They may never pick up another book again. P.S. If I ever see the ridiculous term "reeking Gods" again in any novel, I will surely puke.
