Caveat emptor
This is a product released before it’s ready. That makes it a really cool device for a tinkerer that wants to spend hours messing around with it to get it to work. I’m reasonably tech savvy, and I’m a bit of a tinkerer, but clearly not enough of one this time. After about seven hours of trying to make the device work, I’m returning it.
The app is really cool. If I had to guess (always hazardous) I would surmise that the developer of the product is actually an app developer, and the actual hardware is secondary. The company may want to revise the hardware and make it more durable and stable.
The one big issue with the app is that, when I clicked on the garage door, it showed it opening and closing even though the device wasn’t even connected to the garage door opener yet. After I connected it to the garage door opener, it continued to show it opening and closing, but the door wasn’t actually moving. This is potentially a significant issue since the app is essentially just showing you a picture of an opening and closing door, without validating the actual door position. When I brought this issue up with the developer, my post was delisted on the company's forum. If the app doesn’t show the actual position of the garage door, there’s not much point in having the product. I don't know that it's fraudulent to market a device as giving you peace of mind that your garage door is shut when the device doesn't actually know, but it's certainly noteworthy.
Also, if you’re looking for any basic tech support, it appears to have been crowdsourced to the community of users. There’s no user manual, support email, support number or anything other than a discussion board. You’re pretty much on your own. As I said above, that’s fine for someone who is ok with spending hours to try to figure it out.
Regardless, caveat emptor – not a good experience, product not ready for wide distribution, avoid it if you're not a coder.
