Quite an impressive laptop for the price
I am a huge fan of gaming laptops, so much so that I have owned about 6. I decided to get this because of how thin it is, also because it doesn't scream "gamer" with over the top aesthetics, also for school and gaming.
If you are thinking of getting this for school, definitely worth your money. The 120Hz display is silky smooth and the IPS display is quite impressive, everything looks amazing on this laptop. There are other laptops out there for the same price if not higher, that don't even compare to this in terms of specs.
My only complaint is the keyboard, it doesn't have much travel but you can definitely get used to it. Much better than a MacBook keyboard. The track pad is decent, it gets the job done but it is definitely not as good as a MacBook.
Battery life is about 5-7 hours web browsing. The speakers on this thing are actually quite impressive, they are very lively and they sound good when at the highest volume.
I also gotta add that this computer appears to have extra bass by default. But not the kind of bass the muffles music and vibrates your ears. While using headphones I noticed my movies sounded really good, and I wondered why it sounded like an imax type of thing, well it turns out it wasn’t my headphones but this computer as I get the same effect with other headphones. This alone makes it my go to choice for movies.
Now an important aspect of this laptop, gaming performance. I have another laptop with an i7 6700HQ and a 1060 as well as another i7 8750H laptop with a 1070. The 1660 Ti on this laptop is a Max Q design, not a full 1660 Ti. This puts it a little bit above a desktop 1060 but far below even a mobile 1070.
To put things into perspective, most games have the following options...
Low-Medium-High-Very High-Ultra
With the 1660 Ti Max Q I can run most games at 60-70 FPS on high settings with the occasional dips into the 50s. With the 1070 I can set absolutely everything on Ultra Settings and get 80-120 fps on nearly every game and it is even capable of running some games at 4k in Very High to Ultra settings. However, laptops with a 1070 (or an RTX 2060) run about $400-$600 more.
Bottom line, if you want a laptop with good battery life, good screen, speakers, something you can use on the daily for work/school and play games on high settings this is a very good choice.
If you are buying this because you want to play games on ultra settings at 60 fps then look elsewhere.
Here are some benchmarks for reference
Witcher 3 on High / 60-80 FPS
Rise of the Tomb Raider on High / 65-70 FPS
DmC 5 on Ultra / 82 FPS
* REVIEW UPDATE *
While everything I said holds true, 4 months later this laptop has been nothing but problems lately. First, the laptop would freeze at the login screen every single time. Even after doing a complete Factory Reset the problem persists. The only way to fix it is to put the computer to sleep and then waking it up. I still haven’t found a fix.
Second, after installing the AMD update utility, i restarted my computer and it went into a loop of “your PC ran into a problem it needs to restart”.
I never had any problems such as these on my laptops. Im giving it three stars because maybe I got a lemon and hopefully everyone who buys this has a better experience. This is probably an AMD problem since this processor is new and they aren’t that well established as a gaming laptop brand.
Even though it has a warranty from asus I use this for school so I can’t afford to send it off for 3-4 months for support to fix it.I had to reset to factory a third time.
Unfortunately this has tainted my experience with Asus and I won’t be buying any of their computers anymore. I can’t afford to blow $1000 on something that can’t even do what its suposed to. Stick to MSI, I’ve been using their laptops since 2013 and never had a single problem.
*** 6 MONTH UPDATE ***
After using this computer everyday for school and gaming, it has been nothing but problems as usual. Sometimes the laptop will just go into a black screen and holding down the power button wont work.
On top of that every single Windows update has broken this laptop, apps go missing, computer not starting up, and just yesterday my entire computer got erased after a windows update. I’ve never had any of these problems with my MSI laptops and they have the same updates. I will never be buying another Asus product again, this thing is as reliable as a $300 acer from costco. I wish I could get my money back.
*Windows 1909 UPDATE*
After updating to windows 1909, the backlit keyboard no longer works. This is a software issue as many of the included Asus functions (such as turbo mode, fan speed, etc) suspiciously stopped working after I kept updating my laptop over the course of the past months. As much As i want to blame this on microsoft, Its an asus problem as it doesnt happen to any of my other computers.
