Just too unreliable for energy monitoring or timer functions
I bought several of these smart plugs to figure out the cost of running various items around my home. Having very high Electricity bills is enough to warrant some investment into power monitoring and timers. Seeing how Emporia is specifically marketed to people who wish to lower their electricity bills and have minute by minute monitoring of device usage and they seemed to have a very favorable review rating on amazon I thought I would give 8 of these plugs a go. I plugged these into many areas around the house. Freezer My home office desk small Server Stereo equipment HVAC booster fans And I've been having consistent issues with the smart plugs disconnecting from the wifi completely and refusing to reconnect until they are unplugged and plugged back in or reset and re-setup through the Emporia App. I have tried using a seperate wifi router with only the plugs on them I've tried resetting them I've tried power cycling them Resetting the wifi router Placing all the switches in one room WITH the wifi router to eliminate reception issues I am still getting random switches dropping off the wifi and sit on a slow red blinking light till they are reset. Some of the switches I can get to and reset them but each time I attempt to reset the smart plug and reconnect them using the app, it takes several attempts and 15-20 minutes of resetting and or reconnect attempts before one is successful. I've attempted to use the following wifi APs Asus n66u Asus AC3100 Apple Airport extreme (2006 model) Technicolor c2100 Centurylink modem All of the routers support 2.4Ghz as stated and none of the switches will reliably stay connected. My conclusion is, although these are a great value at this time they are not reliable enough to be used for power monitoring. When the plugs go offline so does the power measurement. so you'll miss the entire time that the smart plug was offline for. Edit: I have been in contact with the Emporia Helpdesk and they seem confused about the blink states of the smart plugs. Although very responsive and seemingly very willing to help, they don't seem able to support their products well. Edit2: They have stated that they're working on a firmware update that will fix these issues. Their Customer support is very responsive and I have not had an easier time getting to support in a long time. And they clearly wish to make things right. I'm hopeful that they will come through and get the firmware fixed.
