Newest Samsung Motion Sensor is a Disappointment
I have purchased the Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor 2015 model (uses CR2450 battery) multiple times from Amazon and I believe the 2015 model is a 5-star product. I thought I was purchasing the same thing again on October 20, 2016 but a new version of the sensor arrived instead (STS-IRM-250 with CR-2477 battery).
I tried out the new sensor by installing it in some of the same locations as my existing sensors. I found that the latest version of the Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor has a much narrower field of view even though it is advertised to be the same. The difference is significant. I found the new version to be unusable for my original intent and I had to swap sensors around so that the new version was installed in a location where a wide field of view was not required.
The new version also has a translucent "lens" instead of opaque. This may be a small detail to many people, however, the translucent lens makes the device look more like a camera which could be disconcerting for guests in my home (particularly for sensors installed in the bathroom).
I have 12 of the 2015 model sensor and would purchase more. However, I will not purchase the latest version again. Note that at the time that I am writing this review, the product images on this page are still showing the 2015 model even though the latest model is being shipped. In case you are as confused as I was about all of the different models, here is a history of the Samsung Motion Sensor models:
