Baffling and Boring
I found the book BORING. Very slow to get started. You would expect that a major disruption of everything electrical on the face of the planet from some unknown/unseen force that has erupted from inside the moon would get the book going quickly, but it was so sloooowww. I don't normally read and review science-fiction thrillers but decided to be daring with my Kindle first pick for the month. There was nothing at all thrilling. Mundane character development with some really bad dialogue: "It's bigger than that now, bigger than any of us." (don't they write lines like that in High School composition classes?) "If you're as good a pilot as you are beautiful, we're in excellent hands." (this from a supposedly well heeled academic who suddenly finds this as some kind of acceptable icebreaker/flirting technique). Her reply: "Gee, that's such a nice compliment,if it were 1960" (wow, original stuff) (and her code name is Blackfox- even more original) Now the world could potentially be in some serious peril here and the General who has the President's ear remarks that he feels it a bad idea to "send civilians (to the Moon) with the possibility that there may be a hostile force up there". Yeah cause really we should send 4 men with what kind of experience? 4 people vs. aliens and you think 4 astronauts are going to stop them?? I wanted a book that suspended reality, not asked me to check my brain at Chapter 1. The world is possibly in end of times peril and the book turns it into a competition with China. That's going to take 6 months. And can only be done using humans. The authors had a free pass to make up some really cool elaborate sci fi scenario and it was totally baffling how it came out so boring. Chapters on men drinking scotch and smoking cigars. Boring and not at all what I expected to find from a novel billed as a Sci-Fi Thriller. As a side note: total pandering by making the U.S. President, British Prime Minister and French President all female.
