I read about 50 books a year and it's pretty rare that I would give up on a book after the first 20 pages or so. I'm afraid I have to throw in the towel on this one and I'm 80% finished. This book starts off strong. It's intriguing and fast-paced. When I first started it I was excited with that "Ooh, yeah, a good book I can settle into" feeling and it held that for the first half (or so) of the book. After that, it loses momentum in a big way. The main characters grow less interesting and they are mostly in boring situations. The "journal-within-a-book" is WAY too long and awkwardly presented ("Well, we just escaped death and are on the most ridiculous getaway conveyance imaginable... what-say we read another 30 pages of this journal?") It's a shame because there's a good story here... feels like this one fell apart in the editing phase a bit.
