I wanted to love it!
I SOOO wanted to love this drone. I have been a DJI Phantom Pilot for years and have owned every model of Phantom up to the Phantom 3 Pro. I was so frustrated with DJI's customer service and lack of beta testing new software, I decided to sell my P3 Pro and go with 3DR Solo. I knew I was taking a few steps back in some areas but watched all of Colin's videos and was convinced the Solo was for me. I also heard many great things about their product support and above all, wanted to support a US based robotics company. Well the drone arrived and software upgrade was painless. Loved that the software can be upgraded right from the app without any wires.
I attached the gimbal and my Hero 3+ GoPro and was ready to fly. Right off the bat I decided to configure the level and compass.... That's when the problems started. The app froze everytime I tried to configure the level. After the 5th try, I launched the configuration and advanced to the next screen but was stuck there as the drone kept thinking it wasn't on a level surface and wouldn't let me continue. In doing some research I read that the app will tell you if the compas and level needed to be calibrated, as I wasn't getting that message, I decided to take it our for a flight anyway.
I took it out and right away noticed a lot of jello effect on the video from the GoPro. It reminded me of the original phantom vision sans gimbal. I landed, remounted the gimbal and took off again. This time a little less jellow but it did come and go often during the flight.
I then landed and charged the battery. On my second flight, the GoPro video wouldn't show in the app. I have to restart the controller, app and GoPro several times in order for it to start working. After I got it to work and took off the controller lost communication with the he gimbal and I could no longer control the panning of the camera.
Landed and reached out to customer support. This was midday Saturday and wanted to chat live with customer support. I logged in and got a message that they don't have chat support on the weekends.
Unfortunately for me. This was it. I was too afraid of the connectivity issues I was seeing with the camera, gimbal and controller. As any drone pilot knows, connectivity issues are the death of all drones. Loose control of your drone and even with fail safe, a tree is always in the future of automated flight.
It is boxed up now waiting for UPS to pick it up on Monday morning. I unfortuniutly went all in as well... Drone, gimbal, extra battery, extra props and backpack. All $1400 of 3DR merch boxed up for UPS.
I ended running to Best Buy today and picked up the Phantom 4. Darn you DJI for making a quality product! The drone is a dream to fly, and the sport mode makes it so much faster than the Solo. I also realized that for about $200 more than the Solo, the tech in the Phantom 4 makes it so much more of a better bird.
Although I swore to myself never to support DJI again, they beat me out, and I am once again a Phantom Pilot. I only wish the Solo would have been the drone I was looking for.
