Yes, it’s Raw and Organic, but is it toxic?!
OK, so after buying for my family and consuming, seven pounds of these cacao nibs in the past (according to my order summary), I learned that ConsumerLabs tested these and found high levels of cadmium- 24.9 mcg cadmium per serving (1.8 mcg per g)! While the FDA has yet to set limits for cadmium in food and supplements (although it does for water), The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests a maximum of 0.3 mcg per g (not 1.8), and California requires a warning label on products that have more than 4.1 mcg per serving (not 24.9). This is why Healthworks Organic Cacao comes with a Prop65 warning. Cadmium is cancer causing in excessive doses, and while you can’t avoid it, you should limit it when possible. If this was any other product, I.E. not organic and Raw, I wouldn’t even bat an eye, but since it is being peddled to the health conscious by a vendor in the US, I think it warrants a little consideration.
