Ummm, Just No…
Given the present circumstances, it is no surprise that the locked-in trope is popular these days! The set-up of this book intrigued me when I saw it at one of my favorite book review sites. And the premise is a good one explored by other mystery writer greats (and not-so-greats) of the past, with futuristic tech making it more promising. Unfortunately, the author squandered the potential of this book. The backstory was negligent or murky, and I think the book really needed that to set it up properly. The pacing was bumpy in this novel-length story, with pages that built suspense followed by others that slowed that pace to a crawl; this book could have definitely used more editing to tighten it. The characters were two dimensional, and frankly, lacking any interesting qualities. If, when, or how they met their maker—and even these sections were lackluster—I truly didn't feel enough toward any of them to care. And the ending? Beyond ridiculous and made me question why I did not stop reading the book earlier. This is one of those books where I found myself thinking afterward that I wished I could get the time spent back! I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
