Great for wasting hours of your life - Same "non" results for 5 different soil types
First let me say I ordered the 1663 Environmental Concepts test kit and directly from Environmental Concepts hoping that by doing so, I would be getting the real product, brand new and with fresh chemicals.
However, the item arrived with no seal or wrapping of any kind, just the kit itself in the box with some airbags. I would have expected it to at least be sealed in plastic or something to indicate it is in fact new and not a resale.
I then tested the following 5 sample soils:
1) Dark dirt straight from the yard,
2) 20% dark dirt mixed with 80% horse manure compost
3) Raised bed soil amended many times over the years with lots of peat, compost, sand, etc.
4) Plain "dusty" clay dirt where nothing has ever grown in 20+ years
5) Fresh new bag of Miracle-Gro potting soil (just purchased 2 weeks ago at Home Depot off new pallet)
I meticulously followed instructions on the collection, drying out, picking out organic matter and small rocks, and crushing the results into a fine powder. I used a separate spoon for each sample. I washed my hands and each item thoroughly with soap and water between each test. I timed everything exactly as instructed. It took just over 4 hours to do all 4 tests on all 5 samples.
Interestingly enough, while I did get slightly different pH test results, they all ranged from 6.0 to 7.0... you know, that muddy orange-ish brown slightly dingy maybe-green color that is impossible to classify. But they were slightly different shades of that.
The remainder of the tests were all no-results, meaning they were clear or colorless, if there was any reaction whatsoever it was way too pale to register.
On the Potash (K) test I had to take 2 new samples because the water was cloudy after simple filtration. The others were clear prior to adding the reagent.
I don't mind the $30 wasted on the test, but I do mind the 4+ hours I wasted doing the tests themselves, that is worth WAY more than $30!
I can't help but wonder if anyone has ever actually tested these kits in a lab to find out if there is anything other than water in the bottles? It would be interesting if someone actually did an expose of how accurate these tests are, such as sampling about 1000 of the kits on known entities and finding out how many actually yield any results at all, and how many actually yield vaguely accurate results. All I know is I will never buy anything from Environmental Concepts or LusterLeaf ever again, and I will advise everyone I can possibly reach to boycott their products as well. Shame on them for selling garbage like this.
