This is a revised review. It is so unsteady on carpet that the least bump (like from a 2 year old grandchild) sends it to the floor with the top globe shattering into a "million" tiny to medium extremely sharp shreds. It looks nice but has some manufacturing problems. For example, even though the base is heavy, it is too small and therefore is unable to keep the lamp standing straight when put on padded carpet. The light on the side is wonderful and using LED three way bulbs in the top allows you to increase the amount of light and is wonderful. However, the light on the side does add weight and causes it to lean on carpet. I'm going to the building supply shop and get one and fasten it so it won't lean. Also, be sure that you assemble this from the bottom so you can pull the cord through as you put it together. There is some sloppiness in cutting the threads and one of the sections will not screw down tight -- this means we have a silver band around the middle. We're probably going to keep it but put a wider base (sold at home improvement stores)on it or something to fasten it to the wall. It might do OK on a hard floor.
