Regrets
The pump had to be replaced within a week. The pump (does not attach with suction cups) that came with it just rattled at the bottom of the hard plastic tub and was SO NOISY. The cups that sit under the net pots hold stagnate water for long periods of time, the timer that came with it limited it to run only EIGHT times a day; additionally the stagnate water started to smell. I had to purchase a new timer that ran the system more frequently and took the cups under the net pots OUT. To decrease the noise, I tried multiple options; a misting system that couldn't get enough pressure to create a mist and then I tried fogponics but needed to buy a fan to circulate the fog. The single disc fogger wasn't enough, but the larger one created to much heat, warming the water.
The tower, once put together is difficult to take a part. The seams on the tower are showing signs of algae growth after 4 weeks. The reservoir holds 17 liters of water and topping it off is essential to get enough water to the roots; a lack of water caused wilted lettuce. It's impossible to get into the reservoir without major difficulty when switching the pump and trying the fogging disc. I cut one of the panels so I could reach into the reservoir to have access to the pump etc., but the pump is too large for the hole I cut out. To get at the pump, I would have to take the entire tower off the reservoir. I am really puzzled why it is so difficult in many of these hydroponic systems to get into the reservoir.
I set up 64 of the 80 pods, and am using about a 1/3 of them. The seedlings that I started are doing very poorly, even with the grow lights that came with my system. The seedlings started in my Aerogadren and moved to this system are doing better. However, the plants are still smaller than the ones in the Aerogarden or my AquaSprout system. Now on to the grow lights that came with this system, it was poorly designed; the grow light electrical cords tangle from the top and into the tower from aluminum strips that extend from the top of the tower. I was told that this system would fit well in a three square feet space with the grow lights. Not true! The aluminum strips and cord on top of the lid, make it very heavy. It's difficult to look in from the top to unclog the dripper and make sure the water is going down to all the net pots. The tower is sitting on an added dolly and when I move it, the dripper system shifts and then misses all the net pots. I have had to check the water system frequently, and having the grow light cords on top make it very difficult. The distance of the lights are not adjustable, so I zip tied the lights to the metal frame of a room divider and laid the electrical cords on the floor. The length of the cords, makes it impossible to shine the grow lights on all sides of the tower This system has been TOTALLY unsatisfactory for indoor use. I have a Aerogarden Farm Plus in my small guest room that I like. My AquaSprout system is beautiful in my living room even if I am still working on some pretty fish. I also bought a Mr. Stacky system, returned it because I wanted something bigger. We are a family of four eating lots of vegetables every day. But now I am reconsidering buying it again. I want to access to fresh vegetables for my family, but am finding this a very expensive way to go. Sharing my experience so you know what you are getting into with this system.
The tower garden will go outside in the Spring. I asked a lot of questions before purchasing this tower, because the seller didn't accept returns and I STILL ran into all these issues.
February 2021 Update: I have since purchased a Mr. Stacky Smart Farm again and modified it. I love it. Smaller footprint, less noisy, NO water splashing-wet floor, trays rotate easily, easy to check water level and larger reservoir.
