★★☆☆☆
An expensive and inferior alternative to the free app
I'm going to be returning my new Kindle. I expected to be able to have text and Audible narration at the same time, like on the Kindle phone app, what Amazon/Audible calls "immersion reading." Turns out, it only does text or audio, just allowing for switching between them. That was a big disappointment, but I might have decided it was still worth keeping, if not for the noticeably lower sound quality. Similar to the difference between a studio recording and a phone call, though not quite as drastic. (Note: I unpaired my headphones from my phone and paired them to the Kindle, keeping the sound quality comparison fair.) I bought the 32 GB version, knowing that quality audiobook recordings take up quite a bit of space. Sadly, the Kindle doesn't download quality audiobook recordings. For relaxation, I do far more listening than reading, making the Kindle Paperwhite a downgrade from just using the Kindle app on my phone. The more eye-friendly display doesn't make up for the less ear-friendly audio. Even the display doesn't live up to the hype. While it doesn't get washed out by bright light, it's far from glare-free. At the right (or maybe better to say "the wrong") angle, I can count the light bulbs behind me from their reflection in the screen, something that very much is not the case with real paper. I've attached a photo to show the glare on the screen, with my phone in the shot too, for comparison, to show the glare is reduced in comparison, but certainly not eliminated. (It's slightly out of focus on purpose, making the text unreadable to avoid potential copyright issues.)
