Poor design and build quality that injures users
The following is my completely candid and unbiased review of the Drive wheelchair, which I purchased to transport my mother short distances after she became unable to walk.
In brief, I would not recommend this item to anyone due to its poor design and build quality. The chair’s one redeeming value is that it folds quickly and relatively compactly; however it is remarkably cumbersome and heavy to place in and remove from a car trunk. But that is a secondary issue compared to the following issues which pose a hazard to the chair’s user.
After several uses I began to notice abrasions on my mother’s forearms, elbows and the back of her calves. A little detective work and I found two areas of the chair that were causing injury to my mom. 1) The plastic trim cup that surrounds the padded vinyl armrests has molded edges which scrape the sitter’s forearms and elbows when they brush past them whilst settling into the chair (see photo), and 2) the small metal hook-like tabs that are welded onto the frame as stops for the pivoting footrests tend to gouge a sitter’s calves when they are sitting down or standing up (see photo).
If those two things weren’t enough, I found yet another quality issue when I snagged my own sleeve on a pin-like spike sticking out from the wheelchair frame (see photo). I believe this is a piece of welding wire that was not ground off from the finished weld joint. In fact, I don’t think any of the low grade welds were ground smooth but rather simply camouflaged under the silver and black pitted finish.
All in all this wheelchair was a huge disappointment despite the many 5-star reviews. I expressed my dismay to Amazon and they were kind enough to accept a return of this item.
Bottom line, spend a little more money and buy a higher quality lighter weight wheelchair that has significantly more than 69 percent 5-star reviews.
Please view the photos as they are more instructive than my words.
